Boipeba Island

Several images of Morro de São Paulo
Boipeba Island is part of the Tinharé Archipelago that forms the Cairu Municipality located in the deep South of Bahia. Surrounded on one side by the ocean and on the other by the Rio do Inferno estuary, it has as outstanding feature its rare natural beauty and large diversity of its ecosystems. The island presents Mata Atlântica (Rain Forest) remains, extensive mangrove swamp areas and of great landscape value. Life flows calmly and everything reminds of the primitivism of a community that a little more than 10 years ago was living isolated without at least having access to eletric power. Since the site is hard to reach, Boipeba is well preserved from anthropic actions which still further perpetuates its natural beauty. The “Morro” is located ON Tinharé Island, in the region of the Dendê Coast, accessible from Salvador or from Valença. Right upon arrival the “Morro” fascinates and entices its visitors. The first impression is that of a postcard; the mooring bridge of the maritime terminal, the “Portaló” - the ancient portal – the ruins of the ancient fortress, the Mother Church and the lighthouse compose the landscape framed by the native forest and by the dazzling blue of the sky and the sea. There are people who chose to remains there, as for instance Italian and São Paulo tourists, who left behind the jacket, the tie and the hustle of the big cities and who are today the happy owners of comfortable and cozy lodges.
Diving, swimming, horseback riding, taking a bath in salt water pools or in fresh water springs are part of an irresistible program. From the belvedere you sight the principal postcard of the “Morro”: the sequence of small bays of the beaches which from natural pools of such limpid water that it is possible to see submersed corals. The beaches don’t have names and are identified by numbers. On the first beach, there are many lodges and summer houses, this beach being suitable for surfing. At low tide, the second beach is being transformed into an aquarium and even without help of equipment; you can admire the richness of subaquatic fauna. The areas of the barracks are delimited with coconut palms and ornamental plants, which lend them a special charm. And it is here too that at night the “luaus” (music under the moonlight) take place. Towards the third beach is the “Saudade” island. The place reminds of a tropical garden – right in the style of Burle Marx – in the middle of the sea. From the third beach we sight the “Caiba” island, a small formation decorated by a single coconut palm. There are also many coral pools on this beach. The rest of the coast is called fourth beach until the “Boipeta” island, an extension of 20km of unspoiled nature.

Detailed programs

Arrival in Salvador. Still in the morning period, departure by twin engine plane to Morro de São Paulo, on a 30 minute lasting flight. Arrival and transfer to the lodge.
2nd day: Ponta do Curral / Coroa / Gamboa
Boat tour, getting to know several beaches – Ponta do Curral with its 20 km of deserted beach, Coroa do Melo, a sandbank located right on the border of the island with the continent, stop in Vilarejo de Gamboa for lunch (not included), a walk for getting to know Vilarejo. After lunch, outing to get to know Praia do Porto de Cima, and after that we shall hike until Forte do Facho to watch the sunset.
3rd day: Morro Ilha de Boipeba
After breakfast, transfer by tractor (with appropriate seats for passengers) for approximately 1 hour until the south of Ilha de Tinharé, where, upon crossing Rio do Inferno by boat (5 minutes), we arrive at the Velha Boipeba beach. In front of us there are several restaurants on the river edge and Praia de Tassimirim to the left, where we proceed for 5 more minutes until Pousada Tassimirim. Everything is paradise like – the fishermen’s colored boats, the Rio de Inferno bar with beaches on both sides, the Tassimirim beach, enclosed by palm trees. Lodging, a stroll on the beach, a sea bath, time for enjoying the place and lunch.
4th day: Ilha Velha de Boipeba
Morning off for enjoying Tassimirim beach, relaxing on the sand, sea bathing. In the afternoon, we shall visit the village of Velha Boipeba. It is a simple and nice village of about 1600 people, founded by the Jesuits around 1563. The central square is actually a lawn with a soccer field and a shade giving tree (jamelão) on each side. It is a place for chatting in the shadow of the Jamelão or do some gambling with Jorge under another tree. In the evening, the same Jorge provides music, where anything goes – reggae, axé and even back country music. We enter the street that approaches the old Divino Espírito Santo Church, constructed by the Jesuits in 1610. We follow the way, going up Alto das Pombas hill at the side of the village. A nice view of the village, the Rio de Inferno bar, several beaches and Tinharé island. Back to the village, we visit the flour house, where the Regis family still makes cassava flour with the traditional method. We can also visit another traditional house, Roldão do Dendê, where oil-palm oil is made, traditional on the island. Clóvis, the owner of the house, still goes on making much oil-palm oil for sale on the Boipeba markets. On the way back we can still stop at the hairy Otavinho’s house, another figure on the island, a collector of everything that can be found on the beach and which be hangs up in his small house. If we want to, we can also buy something. After lunch, we leave Boipeba beach in a wood trunk canoe, those used by local fishermen. The boat glides lightly on one of Rio do Inferno’s arms heading west. This region in indented by various channels of the river and some of the islands have holes that allow us to cross them to the other side during high tide. The vegetation is of low white and red mangrove. In the passages through the islands, the canoe glides through real tunnels, formed by vegetation that closes entirely above the narrow way. The canoe operator has to use all his experience to conduct the canoe without running aground on the countless mangrove roots. We observe the thousands of crustaceans living on the branches during the high tide period; we can even hear the noises made by these bugs walking on the mangrove’s hard wood. In the middle of the trip, a small pause at a beach and return to the beach.
5th day: Boat trip – Diving into natural swimming pools – Praia de Bainema – Ponta de Castelhanos
We leave by boat in the direction of the natural swimming pools of Morerê. When the tide is low, a delicious dip into the swimming pools, in the middle of the reefs, can be made. The Caribe is also here. The boat follows along the coast until Ponta dos Castelhanos in the south of the island. On the way we pass by Bainema beach, one of the most isolated, where we enter into total harmony with nature. At the back of the beach, we find the strange Mata de Bainema, a large part of Mata Atlãntica (Rain Forest) with centennial trees more than 30 m tall and enormous Gameleiras, the real Mata-Paus. A magic and special place. Here, on this piece of virgin nature, we can be sure of not meeting anyone else. A little later we pass by the Cater river bar, where lies a sunken Spanish galley. Right after that, the last completely savage beach and destination of our trip. We anchor the boat – a snack, coconut water and bathing in a calm and crystalline sea – far away from everything and everybody. We remain for some time enjoying this paradise and return in the late afternoon to Velha Boipeba.
6th day: Baia de Morerê
After breakfast, we leave for a hike on the island. We pass by the small hill of the water tank, where we come upon a nice view, seeing to the north the village of Velha Boipeba and Rio do Inferno, separating the islands of Tinharé and Boipeba. To the east, the infinite sea with a strange tower on the middle – the natural gas platform of Petrobras – and to the south, the larger part of the island, with its forest reserves, lowlands, small hills and many oil palms. We continue our hike passing through the small villages of Monte Alegre a Morerê. A small sand road, small hills and many oil-palms. It takes about two hours until Morerê bay. Morerê bay is a paradise of crystalline water, a beautiful beach, with remains of reefs from a time in which the sea was still higher. Some coconut water and a sea bath that can’t be missed. Here we can also eat a fish in one of the simple restaurants beside the beach. After that, just enjoy the place in the shade of a tree, on the beach or in the water. On the way back we pass through several almost virgin beaches – we follow along the Morerê beach until arrival at Coeira beach by way of a detour in the interior. Coeira Beach is still more beautiful , two kilometers of sand accompanied by a large number of coconut palm-trees…And later on we are back again at our beach.
7th day: Boipeba – Morro de S. Paulo – Salvador
It is the day for returning to Morro de São Paulo, crossing Rio de Inferno, taking the tractor in the direction of Morro and the twin engine plane back to Salvador.
